Objet 30 Prime

  • Description:

We have one Objet30 Prime printer at the MakerSpace. This printer, unlike the Dremel and Flashforge, works with Polyjet technology, which works by jetting tiny drops of liquid photo polymer and curing it with UV light. The system consists of the Objet30 Prime printer, one screen – which will be labeled as 1 – connected to the printer and another screen – which will be labeled as 2 – connected to the computer.

  • Materials Available:

We currently have three different materials for the Objet 30 Prime, VeroClear (RGD-810), VeroWhite (RGD-835) and Tango Gray (FLX-950). VeroClear will print solid transparent material with a smooth surface, while Tango Gray will print rubber-like material with a soft surface and better tensile strength. In addition, the printer requires the use of Support Material (SUP-705), that will be removed with the waterjet cleaner after the printing is done. Polyjet materials data sheet is available on the wall behind the printer.

The materials are placed on the bottom right front of the printer. 

Stratasys also offers many other types of materials, such as rigid opaque, bio-compatible and high temperature tolerance materials. However, we currently don’t have those at the MakerSpace.  

  • Procedures: There are 3 steps involved when using the Objet30 Prime printer: Pre-Processing, Production and Support Removal.

Pre-Processing: 

  1. Make sure the printer and the computer are on. There is a key-switch on the back of the printer.
  2. On the bottom screen, open the Objet software. On the top screen, open Objet Studio software. 
  3. With the Objet Studio software, insert your STL part using the insert button on the top left of the screen. You will then see your part displayed on the screen.
  4. On the Objet Studio software, there are 3 different tabs on the top left of the screen: Tray settings,Job Manager, and Model Settings. The Model Settings tab will only appear after you inserted your part and clicked on top of it.
  5. To move, rotate, scale and change characteristics of your part your part, simply click once on top of your part. It will then open 6 options: Advanced Properties, Matte, Glossy, Move, Transform and Lock Orientation. 
  6. There are two finishes available: Glossy, which will apply a glossy finish, and Matte, which will apply a matte finish.  
  7. On the Tray Settings Tab, you can choose in between High Quality (HQ), High Speed (HS) and Draft for your part.
  8. Once you finalize everything, press Validate and Estimate on Tray Settings tab. Once you click estimate, the estimated building time, quantity of resin and support material will appear on the top right of the tab. 
  9. Press Build, and it will ask you to name your file and save it as a Objet Tray File (*.objtf). Click Save.
  10. On the bottom screen, the name of your file will appear, click on the red button and wait.

Production:

  1. After you press the red button, the printer will start preparing to print. The Pre-Print stage will take a few minutes – usually around 10 minutes – and then it will automatically start printing.
  2. The Job Manager tab will appear on screen 2, and it will display the time remaining and also the amount of material being used. Be aware that the time presented on the Job Manager tab does not include the Pre-Printing stage.
  3. The number of slices done by the printing will be presented on the bottom screen. 
  4. Once the printing is over, wait until the message to open the tray appears on the bottom screen. Do not attempt to open the tray until this message appears. 
  5. Use the scraper to take your part off the tray. Once your part comes off, use the scraper again to clean up the first layer support. Leave the tray clean for the next person to use.

Support Removal: 

  1. Once you removed your part from the tray, take it to the room where the water jet cleaner is located.
  2. Turn the water jet cleaner on. There is a key switch on the back of the machine.
  3. Place your part on the tray inside the machine, close the window top and then put your hands through the gloves.
  4. Turn the valve inside the machine 90 degrees, and hold the black water cable.
  5. Grab your part, firmly grasp it and press the pedal that is on the floor. That will make the water come with a higher pressure. Remove all the support from your part.
  6. Once you’re done, open the window top and take out your part. Let your part dry.
  7. Clean the inside of the tank, take out the tray and throw all the support in the trash.
  8. Leave the top window open and pull off the gloves so they can dry.
  • Known Issues:
    • When removing the supports, be careful because parts, or details on parts, can break when dropped or if pressurized water is applied too close to susceptible areas.
